Walsh, ceo British: "OpenSkies volerà anche su Milano"

Ci sarà anche Milano nel futuro della nuova compagnia aerea lanciata da British Airways per i collegamenti transatlantici. Il capoluogo lombardo è nel mirino di OpenSkies insieme ad Amsterdam, Francoforte Madrid e Zurigo. Lo ha rivelato il ceo del vettore britannico Willie Walsh in un'intervista rilasciata alla agenzia turisitica online del Regno Unito Travelmole. Walsh non ha ancora rivelato i tempi di attuazione del collegamento con New York. Il ceo ha anche specificato che sul fronte statunitense si sta studiando la possibilità di attivare voli anche su Boston e Washington. (TTG Italia)

British Airways will launch its new transatlantic subsidiary, OpenSkies, in June with daily flights from New York JFK to Brussels and Paris Charles de Gaulle using 757s carrying up to 82 passengers in business, premium economy and economy sections.

The name of the new carrier reflects the pending liberalization of the US/EC aviation market effective March 31 that allows carriers from either side of the Atlantic access to any destination within the US or EC provided slots are available. "It also signals our determination to lobby for further liberalization in this market when talks between the EU and the US take place later this year," BA CEO Willie Walsh said in a statement released yesterday.

Initially, OpenSkies service will be launched with a single aircraft with plans to add a second later this year and increase the fleet to six by the end of 2009. All will come from the BA fleet and will be retrofitted with Aviation Partners Boeing blended winglets. Dale Moss, a former director-worldwide sales for BA, will be OpenSkies MD.

"They want to start slowly," BA spokesperson John Lampl told ATWOnline. "We think there is a market out there for it. It gives customers more choice. We are not competing against ourselves but the other guys out there: Delta, United, Air France and everybody else."

Lampl said that "70% to 80% of the airplane is focused on business class but there are still 30 seats to fill in the economy class." After initial service is launched, OpenSkies will look to expand to cities such as Frankfurt, Milan, Madrid and Amsterdam, he said. The subsidiary has yet to receive its operating license and certificate from the US Dept. of Transportation.

"This is an interesting development," said aviation analyst George Hamlin, who also noted that using smaller 757s would keep operating costs down. "BA is a very strong brand with business traffic. The bulk of service is business and first class. They are probably looking at thrifty travelers rather than backpackers. I suspect they have done their sums and believe this is possible to do."

British Airways next summer will start offering premium, non-stop service between New York and Europe, bypassing its London Heathrow base.

To do so, London-based BA is launching a subsidiary airline called OpenSkies that will fly daily from New York to Brussels and Paris Charles de Gaulle. It's primarily aimed at the growing number of trans-Atlantic business travelers.

The plan is to launch service in June with a single plane, with the goal of adding a second within six months. By the end of 2009, the airline plans to fly six Boeing 757s from BA's current fleet.

The airline still needs regulatory approvals from European Commission and U.S. authorities, which could alter its planned start date.

It also needs landing rights in New York. OpenSkies will fly out of either Newark or John F. Kennedy, and it remains unclear which service — Paris or Brussels — will be started first.

The aircraft will be configured to carry just 82 passengers in three classes of service, vs. about 200 passengers in the typical configuration.

The carrier will offer a handheld video system for in-flight entertainment. The most expensive cabin will have 24 seats that unfold into 6-foot-long flat beds. The cheapest cabin will have just five rows containing 30 seats.

OpenSkies will compete against European airlines such as Lufthansa and KLM, as well as U.S. airlines such as United (UAUA) and American. (AMR)

The new airline owes its name to the Open Skies treaty approved last year by the European Union and the United States. Among other things, the agreement lets European airlines for the first time fly between the USA and airports outside their home countries.

"By naming the airline OpenSkies, we're celebrating the first major step in 60 years toward a liberalized U.S.-EU aviation market," BA CEO Willie Walsh said in a statement.

OpenSkies passengers will be able to earn BA miles. Dale Moss, the BA executive who will run OpenSkies, said the carrier will rely on BA for substitute airplanes if problems arise with its small fleet.

"We want to compete as a new entrant, but we want to have a some of the benefits of having a parent like British Airways," Moss says.

In the future, OpenSkies plans to fly to other business centers, including Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Milan, Madrid, Zurich and Geneva.

Moss wouldn't speculate about fares, but says the airline will operate with low costs, and offer premium service. "We just bring to the table a very different product, a different price point and the heritage of BA," he says.

The Open Skies treaty takes effect in a few months, freeing U.S. and European airlines to cross the Atlantic without government-imposed limits on where they land. Continental, (CAL) Northwest, (NWA) US Airways, (LCC) Delta (DAL) and Air France are among carriers that have announced new trans-Atlantic routes as a result of the agreement.

Se continua di sto passo il petrolio li mettono al prato i B757 come stanno facendo con i B747 B767 B737...
Un lato positovo dell'aumeto..c'è ..costringe le compagnie a rinnovare al flotta,bastacn i carcassoni..vedasi oggi l'annuncio di AA che ritirerà gli MD80...che segue i comunicati di molte altre.
