In just under two months, brand new carrier Norse Atlantic Airways will commence ticket sales. The airline adds that an inaugural flight will take place sometime in the second quarter of 2022. But where exactly is the airline going to fly? Let's look at the latest for this exciting new carrier.

'When' but not 'where'
It was less than a month ago that the United States Department of Transportation (DoT) approved Norse Atlantic Airways' application for flights across the Atlantic Ocean to the US. The Norwegian low-cost carrier came into being in early 2021 and has since been working hard to raise capital, attain permits, acquire aircraft, and hire crews.

With most of these important tasks now complete, the carrier is (almost) ready to officially announce its first destination(s). Indeed, the company's CEO, Bjørn Tore Larsen, said the following in an official statement:

“Future customers and supporters on both sides of the Atlantic are reaching out to us every day asking about when they can start buying tickets, when we will be airborne and not least what routes we will be offering. We...can confirm that our goal is to launch ticket sales by the end of March and our first flight to take off in the second quarter,”

The airline's statement notes that its first flight will depart from Oslo to an unspecified US destination while its CEO adds that route network finalization is currently taking place. However, if you read further, you'll see that the destinations have actually been revealed already...
Building the team
Norse Atlantic Airways reports that it has received over 3,000 applications for its initial 50 Oslo-based pilot positions. The lucky 50 have since been selected and are now undergoing training.

Although additional crew bases will be established in the future, it appears that Norse Atlantic will have its first cabin crew base on the other side of the Atlantic, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Training of the first class will commence in just a few weeks with a group that consists of 400 team members.

The airline has signed collective bargaining agreements with pilot and cabin crew unions on both sides of the Atlantic, in Norway, the US, and the UK.

"We are building a high-performance culture and creating an environment where we value diversity, ensuring that all colleagues feel a sense of belonging. We are very pleased with the colleagues we have recruited so far,” - Bjørn Tore Larsen, CEO, Norse Atlantic Airways

While the airline has yet to specify where it will fly with its Boeing 787s, what are some possible options? Well, the disclosure of the airline's crew base gives us a pretty huge clue. After all, with a cabin crew base being established in Fort Lauderdale, it would suggest that the airline will have operations there. Otherwise, it would be running a very inefficient operation by relocating or shuttling cabin crews to another part of the US!
With a crew base in Fort Lauderdale, Norse Atlantic would be able to have its crews there deployed to either Fort-Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL) or Miami International Airport (MIA).

However, if we look beyond the airline's press statement and to its government filings, we can see where it will soon be flying. Indeed, Norse Atlantic's first three routes were disclosed in its submission to DoT for a foreign air carrier permit. The three routes are as follows:

Oslo to Fort Lauderdale (for South Florida)
Oslo to New York Stewart (for the New York area)
Oslo to Ontario (for the Los Angeles area)
Considering the fact that its Fort Lauderdale crew base is the airline's first, we would anticipate this city being the first official Norse destination.

Given these destinations and a summer launch period, will you be giving Norse Atlantic a try this year? And what do you think of their destinations? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Da dicembre 2023 Norse Atlantic collegherà Berlino e Parigi a Miami, oltre alle tratte già in essere da Londra e Oslo. Gli operativi da Parigi 4xw, mentre Berlino 1xw.
