Hong Kong International Airport has taken just two years to commission, construct and test its third runway, which is scheduled to commence operations on November 28, 2024. The 3,800-meter (12,470-foot) long Center Runway will increase the airport's capacity by around 30% and alleviate slot constraints to facilitate more airline growth.
Cathay Pacific is looking forward to 2025
On Tuesday, Cathay Pacific congratulated the airport ahead of commissioning the Three-Runway System (3RS), which it said will mark a new phase of growth and development for the Hong Kong aviation hub. The additional runway capacity comes at a perfect time for Cathay Pacific, which has been announcing new routes and is finishing 2023 in a sound position.
Cathay Pacific (Cathay) also announced it will reach 100% of pre-pandemic flights from January 2025, which is an excellent return given the hardships the airline faced from both political unrest and extended COVID-19 lockdowns. Cathay and its low-cost carrier, HK Express, will be adding more flights and destinations and the Group expects to operate to more than 100 destinations worldwide in 2025, another significant marker for the airline.
Cathay is investing in Hong Kong's future
Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) are all critical to each other's success, and Cathay is firmly committed to the growth of its home hub and city. The airline is investing more than HK$100 billion ($12.9b) over the next seven years, including orders for more than 100 new-generation aircraft, such as the Airbus A330neo and Boeing 777-9, world-leading cabin interiors and lounges, and digital and sustainability leadership.
Cathay Pacific Airbus A330
According to fleet data from ch-aviation, Cathay Pacific has a fleet of 180 aircraft with a further 73 on order. The Airbus fleet includes one A320-200, 15 A321neos, 43 A330-300s, 18 A350-1000s and 30 A350-900s, and from Boeing it has 53 777-300s and 14 747-8F and six 747-400ERF cargo aircraft. The orders listed by ch-aviation are for 16 Airbus A321neos, 30 A330neos, six A350F freighters and 21 Boeing 777-9s.
These investments reflect the airline's strong commitment to boosting air travel and cargo capacity, elevating customer experiences and strengthening the Hong Kong international aviation hub. Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam said the introduction of the Three-Runway System will be a landmark moment for Hong Kong and one that ushers in a new era of possibilities for the airline's home hub and its aviation industry.
"I am particularly pleased that the successful completion of Cathay's rebuild coincides with the opening of the Three-Runway System. We can now truly put the pandemic behind us and firmly focus on the future and we are eager to continue doing our part to elevate Hong Kong's status as a world-leading international aviation hub, connecting Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland and the world."
Since the new North Runway was officially commissioned in November 2022, HKIA has continued to operate with two runways, with the Center Runway temporarily closed in tandem for reconfiguration. The reconfiguration works have included re-leveling the runway pavement to tie in with connecting taxiways, constructing new runway entry and exit taxiways, building new wrap-around taxiways at both ends of the runway and more.
The Center Runway's flight check was completed in September, and AAHK has continued with the necessary preparatory work towards commissioning the Three-Runway System, including an aircraft crash and rescue exercise on the Center Runway in the early hours of October 15, 2024.
